Right so today i finished installing my new timing & balance shaft chain.
All up the job took 6 hours and was fairly straight forward and was a lot easier than I'd first thought. I timed up the cam shaft chain first go and got it to stay put on the crank sprocket when installing the tensioner.
I largely followed the PDF from Total Vauxhall but they got a few of the steps in the wrong order. For instance, the cam shaft chain tensioner guide rail can't be removed before taking the chain out first
I didn't stop to take too many photos but here's a few:
1) Old chain and cam sprokets removed

2) New balance shaft chain installed and timed up.

3) Close ups of timing marks on balance shafts.

4) Close up of timing marks on crank after having fitted the new camshaft timing chain & guide rails

5) Bodgy home made crank pully locking tool that my mate fashioned up from a spare piece of steel. Worked great though 🙂

After bolting everything back together again, it started first go and tick over is very smooth. I'll take it easy for the next few hundred kilometres to let everything settle in.
The only wear we could find on the old parts was on the crank sprocket for the camshaft chain, and some minor wear on the cam shaft guide rails.
Next job is to fix the bloody windscreen washer pump and find out why I keep blowing rear tail/brake lights.
