2.2 direct engine noise

Hello!

My engine's started making a ticking/tapping sound when its cold...

hard to explain so here's a vid!

My car is a 2004 2.2 direct sxi.

Only does it when the engine's cold and stops when the temp gauge gets to 80. apart from this the cars driving fine.

Do i need a new timing chain? lifters? oil change? (which i think is soon due anyway)

Any help very much appreiciated as if it is something serious..i want to nip it in the bud before it gets worse!!!

That does not sound good at all. If I was you I would not drive it, at all. It sounds like the chain is slack and hitting off something. Do not drive it just incase it's the chain, or you will end up needing a new engine. Get it checked out asap

as above, get the chain inspected and also the exhaust manifold just in case thats cracked, but the slapping noise isn't good 🙁

i have something abit like that only lasts a split second and mainly does it first thing in morn thought mine was a tappet now not so sure

yeh i think so mate will have a listen out and get back to you

the exhaust manifold can make a weird noise when cold if it's cracked, easily checked by removing the heatshield and looking for the tell-tale black line between the outlets, otherwise it's the chain 🙁

Lol!...sorry for the delay (laptops decided to die on me aswell!)...so using my mums at the mo!

My mate had a look and said it is the chain, maybe slack? good news is that he'll do it for me so i wont be paying too much for labour! he thinks its prob a dodgy/knackered tensioner, but the whole lot's going to be changed to be safe! (chain, tensioner, cogs...or whatever you call them!)

When the new chain kit arrives..we're going to give it a full service aswell so (hopefully) it will be running like new!

Sooo ,the car is sat in his drive at the mo waiting for the gear to arrive!

Thanks for all the info and telling me not to drive it...could have been much worse if i had!
