Hi all,
I'm just signing off a feature of changing the cams on the Z22SE that was written by a contributor and I'm not convinced by one of the steps.
The mechanic who did the job (on his own car) said that he locked the chain tensioner in place, and when he started the engine, it fill with oil and tension the chain. Is that a known method of chain tensioning or is it quite possibly dodgy?
From what I can gather, the official method is to set Cylinder 4 to 10 degrees BTDC using a dial gauge (at TDC the cam lobes are pointing upwards), by turning the engine off the bottom pulley bolt, then fitting the tensioner, and pushing down onto it with the chain with a 'rounded bar' to unlock it and thereby tensioning the chain (that's what the Haynes Vectra C manual I have says).
Any help greatly appreciated!
Cheers - Dougie
