Steering rack to be replaced? Help!!!!!!!!!

Hi all. Had the car looked at over the weekend because there was a strange noise coming from the engine? At first I thought it was the alternator which I put in another tread but it seems to be the power steering pump that is making all the noise.
The thing is Opel in Ireland do not sell the steering pump separately, they say I have to buy a new steering rack which comes with the pump at the cost of 1000e not including Vat. that’s not including labour. Is this correct? Can I not buy the pump by itself? Does anyone have a pump and if so can I just change it out for the new one? I have a guy who will do all for work for me. He said try up in Northern Ireland to see if I can get a new steering rack as it will be cheaper. Has anyone had this problem before?

If thats not including labour then it is going to be expensive as i have heard it is a big job to replace these. Can you just not buy one second hand and get a back street garage to fit it?

are they electric pas ?

is the pump located on aux belt ?

Yes it is electric and its not on the aux belt I don’t think, I can’t remember seeing it attached to one. Its right at the back of the engine bay on the right attach to the back wall of the engine bay.

Do you know if I can get a pump on it own?

Would a Vectra steering rack be the same type?

I dont think that it is 2.2 spacific you just need to know what type you have i believe the astra is delphi gen 2 which is what most of the newer mk4 astras have.

Yes you can get the pump on it's own.

No a Vectra one is not the same.

You’re a star, that’s what I was going to ask next. I was on to a guy and he said there are two types and one was the Delphi and the other was TWR smooth or ribbed pump.
I’ll order the Delphi which cost about 300pounds which is a massive saving from 1000e

Bad news.. cant get the pump by itself now. I have to get the full works, steering rack and pump at about 800e from up the north then get a local guy to fit it.

Does one steering rack and pump fit all Astra’s, ie would one from a 1.4 model do?

I really don’t wont to spend all this cash on it . I have 95k on the clock and it a 01 so its getting old. Is it worth it? Its still in great nick though

Thanks for the link but the two types they are saying are the smooth or ribbed pump but mine is the Delphi gen 2 type which I was informed of earlier. How will I know for sure tho? What do I look for under the car? Is there a stamp? It would so much handier if it was the smooth or ribbed one then I wont have to get the steering rack as well.

You really need to double check before you buy.

I may have got it wrong earlier you may have a TRW Gen 2 dunno..

Here is a picture of all the pumps i know of. You should be able to see it if you look to the right hand side of the exhaust manifold.

You do need to confirm what you have first and if they are all univeral fit.

Hi and thank a million for getting the pictures and helping me. You have saved me a lot of cash and thank god I didn’t make a costly mistake. It’s the TRW 2 for sure. I had a good look comparing the pictures and that’s the one.

Thanks for links also. I have asked what year is the car and what mileage it has done. Will wait and see what he says.
