Drilled Airbox

Just wondering how much power you really lose by drilling your airbox? I'm asking this question because ive done a couple of mods e.g

Removed Pre-Cat
Modified air intake
K&N Filter

After driving for a while i decided it needed to sound a bit more throaty so i drilled 5, 20mm holes in the wing side of the airbox even though everybody says don't because of it sucking in warm air. But i like to experiment, and ive got to say it sounds sweeeeet and really does feel more responsive.

So i put it to all you Z22SE owners whats your opinion am i just imagining it feeling more responsive because of the sound?

the air box is small and the pipework from tb to the grille intake has a nasty bend and is restrictive

i am thinking of doing it when i can be bothered

you could put a vectre c throttle pipe on it, its more round and hasnt got a nasty bend init. a few people on ere have got them fitted to the astra iv got a brand new one never been used retail £32 at vaux can sell for £22 delivered if your interested but. send a pm if you are buddy

i have done the same mods on my air box as you and went on a rollin road the bhp was 142.7 when standard states 144 but the torque figures were around 154 where as the standard is stated at 149 so all in all im happy with the results of these mods i have just removed the pre-cat now and am hopin to get another run on the dyno soon to see what difference that makes

Anyone else got anything to add? I thought there would be quite a few people saying Nooooooooooooooooooo Dont drill your airbox!!! lol

dilling your air box is fine on the wing side of it as there is NO heat there at all, as there is a hole in the inner wing so air can come through there and from the bottom of the car. its a good way of getting more air in to the car.
the z22se does not suffer from heat soak as much as all the other vauxhalls as the engine is a crossflow design and has the exhaust manifold on the back so heat does not really got to the intake side as much as say a 1.8 would as the exhaust manifold is on the front of the engine so the heat gets blow straight back in to the intake side 😃

Nice one sdbutler10. Next question how many holes would people reccomend and what size, as i said ive drilled 5 at 20mm is that enough or too many?

you could have as many as you want really i tried it on mine and had 1 50mm hole and seemed ok

Its a real nice sound not 2 boy racerish when you get to 3000rpm it sounds.....well i can only descibe it as bwaaaaaaaaaarb!!!! Im 32 years old and our lass is 40 and and she hasnt called me a chav for the sound,so it cant sound too bad!
