Windows XP Activation

I've been running my Desktop PC on Windows XP fine for over 6 years, and for some reason today, it's asking me to re-activate the product.

The install was done from a recovery disc, and there is no product key to input.
The computer took a windows update yesterday. Does anyone know if this is something Microshaft are doing? It won't even let me into the PC to get anything off, it just locks me out.

I've tried putting the code through the automated activation service with Microsoft, but it comes back with a error.

I think they may be making people do this after someone dropped a massive bollock by giving free product keys and install iso's

it is your windows update

installs a validation tool and subsequenly locks u out if your unlucky

i think it fools xp into thinking your booting into safe mode thus disabling WPA-check

i got 25k worth of xp keys but i know they will be useless with your update file and most probably lock u out

i seen bsod using copied keys

Cheers Mike, the only reason I still use Windows XP is for my mixing software, but there is a new release out for Vista which I can use, been playing with the Demo today.

So, if I can get everything working on my Laptop, XP can take a jump, and I'll fully switch to Linux on my Desktop.

another way of doing it is go into the recovery console and delete the system32/config files and replace with earlier system restore point thus removing the new dll and registry file that was inserted due to auto update
