Removing my head (z20let)

With me having a snapped manifold bolt in my head on my Gsi Turbo would it be easier just to remove the head and take it away to be drilled out? How hard is it to fit the head gasket once it was all repaired? Is it a job I could do myself? I have a driveway to work on and I am in no hurry to get stuff done. I have torque wrenches to get it all torqued back up again. Cheers

u got any photos of the snapped off stud

as for taking off the head then u might as well do some work on it whilst it is off cos u will need a decent head kit for this engine and that will set u back a ton

i.e arp head bolts, polished and ported head, cams

also u have to be careful about skimming the head as it will increase compression and u dont want that 🙂

u can get drill bits that will drill into the stud and at the same time pull it out

yeah they are very good i can rememeber what you call em shame ya couldnt fit a drill in the engine bay but maybe ya could wid a 90degree adaptor

I was going to take it to Vauxhall and ask them to do it. I was going to ask them to fit a new Vxr Turbo, then they would have to do that snapped bolt for me while they fit it.

Probably mate. They said they would take that snapped stud out for £350

can u get to it if u drop the bumper / grille / rad out ?

Maybe, here is a picture of the missing stud. my mate said it looks deep inside. Far top left hand side

have u worked whether u have sufficient room if u start stripping it down

its not a bad job to remove the head tbh.
that snapped one looks like its behind the turbo so prob cant get a drill on it to remove it
you can do the head your self as long as you take ur time if your not 100% sure buy a haynes manual they alweays help.
but you dont want it skimmed to much as to much and it will keep on popping head gasketsthe vxr turbo is no good on the let egine i have spoken to a few mates who have it fitted to there let the turbo just keeps dieing. save your cash and buy a garret turbo.

If I buy a garret I would need a tubular manifold and a few other bits, I would have to have the boost low so it would not pop my engine as you normally need internal work when going for a garret. It's what I have heard lol

as long as you keep power around 250 bhp then the vxr turbo will be ok, it's just people expect miracles from it :lol:

250Bhp is spot on for me, I don't want to go further than that as it's putting more presure on the engine. It will probably be going to Vauxhall for them to sort out as I don't know anyone else who would take the challenge on lol

Tricky choice but if it was me id strip the turbo off, rad and bumper. buy a couple of those reverse thread drill pieces and get it out my self... Try and save money if you can mate!??

i would do the same as shane.
them drill bit can be good but you do need to drill a hole in the stud before then put the reverse bit in afterwards and slowley does it.

I don't fancy having ago at drilling it, just incase I popped something into the head by accident. It's a shame no one in the yellow pages can come to the house to do it. The Turbo is going to have to come off so that will needed primed up again. I will probably just let the Vaux dealer get on with it and put a new Turbo on at the same time. They can then fit the cooling mod for the Turbo at the sane time.

priming a turbo is easy tho mark all you have to do it put some oil in the oil feed area and thats it.
