Lack of Oil Pressure

I've just replaced the engine in my Astra G, I've now got it started but it sounds awful and the oil pressure light is on. There is plenty of oil in it.
When first start the engine it sounds fine and no light, once running 30 seconds or so it starts tapping and the oil light comes on...

Any ideas what could be causing the lack of oil pressure?

if the engine has been sitting around for a while then the oil pump might of corroded

where did you get the engine from ?

have you any history on it ?

it is a legal requirement for engines sitting in say a garage are not allowed to have oil in them and as result they start to seize up and rust if left for years on end

strange with this engine as the water pump isn't located down the bottom of the block where this is more likely to happen

quick test is take the oil filler cap off and start her up, you should start to see oil hitting the insides of the recess, if you dont then take off the cam cover and inspect the oil galleries to see if it is coming up, the pickup pipe could be blocked also but my bet is the oil pump has failed

it could be a duff oil pump or a blocked oil pick up.

or a stuck pressure relief valve

Because the light doesn't come on until the engine has been running for a while then I'd say it's a blocked oil pickup or the relief valve. If it's the relief valve then the light should go out when you rev the engine, but this is risky because the light means you have no oil pressure and you shouldn't even be running the engine let alone revving it...

hmmm interesting reading this thread, without appearing to be thick, the oil pressure light, i assume this is the oil can symbol, the same one that comes on if oil is low? reason i ask i have just bought a vectra b 2.2 car to rip the engine out to replace my veccy c sxi 2.2's engine. when i was driving this vectra b home i did about 5 miles then oil light came on, top end rattling its ar*e off, turned engine off for 10 mins had a rant and tant then started it up again (i had checked the oil level and it was on max) it seemed fine then, it was an 80 mile drive and this happened again a couple of times occasionally blowing the odd blast of white and dark grey smoke out, any ideas guys,

could be the pick up pipe or a dodgy oil pump or simply too thin oil

cheers Vocky, i topped it up with a litre of 10/40 fully synthetic on the way home and thats when it seemed to run better althouth its still not right
