Contacted Vx about oil level checking as every time mine goes in for service, the level is always a few mm above Max' when i check it on a cold engine (which is what I've always done), below is the reply I got back, what do you reckon guys, just out of curiosity!!
Thank you for your email received on 23 April 2009, regarding the correct engine temperature at which to measure your oil.
**I have consulted our Technical Department who have advised that the correct temperature to measure the oil level at is that referred to in your manual. This is probably at operating temperature with the engine switched off and waiting at least five minutes before taking the measurement.
If you measure the level when the engine is cold all the residual oil will have drained out of the pump and galleries of the engine giving an artificially high reading on the dipstick, hence the engine oil appears overfull after a service when measured cold. This extra residual oil is not supposed to be taken in to account in the oil level reading. **
