Oh dear...bottom end knocking!

Couple of miles from home last night (on way back from london) my Astra got rather rattly. Had been sat at fairly high speeds for about 30 mins (120-140 on clocks).
Checked oil this morning and wasn't even registering on the dipstick (checked yesterday and was full!!) - topped it up and stuck a new filter in but its properly noisy now... oil filter is FULL of metal fragments.

Oops, time to throw a V6 in then I think!

Oh dear thats not good at all.

I presume the high speed you quote was all done on private roads / a track.

Oh yes of course, a really really long private track 🙂

No visible oil leaks etc... mate has got a spare engine potentially... just need to strip it down and check the damage really 🙁

I would assume 5-30 fully synth... but need to check exactly what was put in when the chains were done!

Mate has an engine available for me... i'm tempted just to put it away somewhere for a few months and do the head, get a decent manifold etc...

Alternatively I just just break it, fuck it off and buy something decent dunno..

We have had a thought... could be the oil pump gear. Have heard cases in which the crank pulley expands with head and can crack / shatter the inner drive gear... hoping it is that as should be an easy fix. Will just need a mega flush of the engine 🙂

Gonna drag it in to the garage on Saturday and go from there 🙂

Cheers dude... gonna leave it with the old boy's garage tomorrow.

If its just oil pump then happy days, if damage is any worse i'm gonna chuck a V6 in - more power, easier to work on and less in the way of stupid electrics :p

i would say the metal is the remainders of a shell off ya bottom end

if your oil pump fell apart then your engine would of seized up on the motorway

Can't see it being a shell Mike - the noise is intermittent now - can drive for a few minutes with no noise then it'll be noisy as hell for a bit. If It had thrown a shell it wouldn't want to drive at all.

when big end goes it doesnt knock all the time.... on start up and when under load.... or if its completley bolloxed it'll knock 24/7

i ran a 1.0 nova with a knackered crank for 18k

didn't misfire or seize

got through a ltr of oil a week and knocked like hell

Wellll we had the sump off on Monday, was spun a bearing on #1.

Yet t ostrip it down properly but crank is scored. Will either send it for a regrind or just pick up another engine (mate has a good bottom end for sale).

Still want a V6 but don't have the time t ostick it in unfortunately...

The 'good' news is that Ihave a courtesy car - nice 09 reg Agila 😃 Fucknig love it too tbh 🙂

sorry al media but it was a good guess

i rather i was proven wrong

the knocking noise comes from gaps and movement in the rod and piston

i think the big problem u might have is the condition of the cylinder wall, if it needs to be bored out then it starts to get expensive

i have access to a bottom end for practically free so pm me if your interested

If bores are damaged it is having a V6.

If its any easy fix its going up for sale.
