where is all the oil going after replacing chain?

i have recently done the chain and valves due to the tensioner failing, anyway put it all back together runs lovely but it is using over half a gallon a week!!! car does 3-400miles in that week, no signs of leaking oil, and no excessive smoke coming out of exhaust, where the hell is it going????? could really do with some pointers on this, the oil is costing as much as the petrol to run the thing lol :problem:

did you replace the valve guides ?

they always crack when the valve bends

Hi Vocky, yes mate i replaced them all as i got them in the complete head gasket kit i bought

the valve stem seals come with the head seat, the valve stem guides are part of the cylinder head and require specialist machines to change them

did U check if there are any changes with smoke colour mate? I mean - when U pushing,iz there a cloud behind U? ask someone to folow U and ask,becase if U are leaving white or blue smoke(only when pushing)and if smels bad U have stil problem with head gasket and with oil piston rings(if valves sealers are new), U wont notice change of coolant, but U will have to add oil all the time coz engine will burn that oil with fuel in burning chamber,thats why oil is been consumped mate. good luck. let Us know what U finf out with that. cheers

thanks for the reply,
When the car is started from cold it puts out some blue smoke, then when warm it turns white, but its not excessive amounts, i have good compression on all 4 cylinders and i replaced the head gasket when i did the valves and they were torqued up to the correct Nm :-(

i did a compression test on an x18xe and all the cylinders were hitting 16 bar but it was blowing out a pint of water a week

then the mayo arrived a weeks later

listen John. i think whoever did Your head gasket didnt do that right mate coz Im after few bits in my Viki - crank sealer front,valve sealers, head gasket and inlet and outlet manifold gaskets and belive me bud, its all correct now! i had those problems as U but they are gone now and im not adding any extra oil to engine uff thank god 🙂). basiclly problem with those colours of smoke iz staring from 2 problems mate - head gasket ore valve sealers+piston oil rings. I think that if U still adding oil, and if U didnt notice any of leaks on engine,on the ground, Your car iz burning oil budy . sorry mate but I dont know enything else abot what can cause that leak else.

Hi guys thanks for your ideas, i am going to pull the engine out (as i need to change the clutch as well) i will put it on the bench and do the lot, rings, guides etc hopefully it will be like a new engine, but the bloody thing has only done 36k anyway lol. i will let you know how i go

hi, mine is using oil too like no tomorrow, is it the same thing as i only notice the smoke at the bottom of a hill, it doesnt realy do it any other time which is puzzling, its had the head replaced and the chain kit done, also im getting a white cream on the dip stick but nowhere else, garage is saying they cant find out whats wrong with it?

how many miles U doing every day mate? coz if U starting engine doing few miles to work etc and then turning off, so that means the engine cant get warm enough so the white cream on deep stick its normal thing, U shouldn't be worry if there are no leaks .
about oil consumption- I have problem as well mate, i was running on 5w40 before and i was adding a lot,even after replacing valve sealers and crank sealer ;/ then I changed on 10w40 and I add once so far but Im thinking about oil rings :think: should i do them or not ;/ ehh always something

I had a change of heart, i did the clutch, i will do the rings in a couple of weeks, i will just keep topping the oil up cos i CBA at the moment lol

whip head off, drop sump, pull pistons out, change rings and rebuild

Paid £146 for head gasket,bolts and rings last week when I done mine.

Took me 2-5hrs to strip engine on first afternoon then spent a few hours with a bottle of wine cleaning the pistons (wine was for drinking!). Best way to clean a piston ring grove is with the old rings, snap one and use it to gently clear the carbon out of the groves

Next day Rings arrived around 11.00 and by 1500 I had the pistons back in, sump on, head on, chain back on and cam cover re-fitted. Then spent a few hours on the third day attaching ancillery components. Engine started first flick of the key as well. :thumbup:

Bearing in mind I'm an experienced mechanic total time was around 10 hours to rebuild lying on back outside house with car on axel stands. Had already done the Valve Stem Seals when I removed the head the week before. In a workshop enviroment I imagine a Z22SE rebuild is possible in a day, maybe longer if Valve Stem Seals done but then again thats what the Apprentice is for! !

ive got a similar problem with mine. Up to 3.5 k revs the bbq feels slow but then pulls fine part this this. Then at the of the rev range the will smoke out the back unders load. Its currently using about 1 litre say every 200 miles max. Will it just need rings and valve peaks replacing or is the engine no good. Driving the car around town it does not smoke at all really out of the back but still uses oil. Thanks p.s im typing this on my phone so apologise for predictive text.

If it is consuming that much then, while you do the rings do the valve guides / seals and timming chains.

yeah done both chains about 1.5k miles ago. So you think the guides will have to be done too!
