chain tensioner - how to refit?

Just been told my cams should be back any day now but the one thing thats bugging me is how to refit the tenioner so it works spot on?? I know on the sr20det nissan engine I had I used to pull off the rocker cover and slap the release pin with a screwdriver to make sure it works but this tensioner doesnt seem to be that kettle of fish :lol:

Any help lads?? (and ladettes)

Hi Shaun, unscrew the tensioner from the back of the engine (32mm i think from memory) take it completely out and push and twist the piston anticlockwise and the piston will come out, be careful there is a spring behind it, then put the piston back in on the first notch, line up your cams and crank with the colours on the timing chain and put the tensioner back in, it will self adjust, when you have put the tnsioner back in just check that all of the timing marks are still in line, the bottom one on the crank sometimes jumps at tooth

I get everything your saying there apart from the first notch part? I dont have the tensioner to hand at the moment but I'll say I'll figure it out.. :eh: So theres no chance it will not put full tension on the chain when replaced?? dunno..

Hi Shaun, when you take the tensioner out, you will see where the spring slots in that there is a little pin and a cylinder that has 'steps' in it as the chain stretches over the yearsthe sping pushes onto the next pin etc, its self adjusting, as long as you put it on the very first pin an re assembly it will find its own tension and will always keep full tension on, this is where the problem was in the older z22se engines, the oil wasn't getting through properly and the tensioners stuck causing failure, i have one knocking about somewhere, i will tr and get a picture uploaded for you as it hard to explain without knowing what they actually look like

Right well after a month of no cams... I got them back today :thumbup:

I realised I never got the cam sprocket bolts so will order them in the morning when the vaux dealer re-opens :problem: But I took the tensioner apart and when I pushed the piston back onto the slotted guide, while twisting clockwise, it clicked into the first slot... Is this the one talked about before??

thats tensioned, just refit it to the outer section and press the tensioner firmly when doing the first few threads into the head

I take it when the pressure builds up it pushes the slotted section into the piston part which will un latch it?? Anyway I'm happy :mrgreen: Hope the stealer has the bolts in stock but doubt it 🙁

If the piper cams give me as many ponies as stickers that they give I'll be pushin 190 boys :lol: :lol: :lol: I take it the cam lube goes on anything that the cam moves on??
