blue smoke on start up

Hi,

started my 2003 2.2 vectra sri today and found that it was not idling right, rev the engine to about 5k rpm and noticed a cloud blue smoke from the exhaust, when revs returned to idle car was running fine, drove for about 30 miles and had no probs strange noises, strangley car felt smoother than usual.

whe I returned home revved the car hard and this time there was no smoke at all

any ideas what could have caused this?

Also not sure if to get a new chain, car has done 71k miles with no rattles on start up, as I believe is the sign of a chain failure

could be oil from the cam breather going into inlet manifold and being blown through your engine

could be leaking valve stem seals

As mike says it could be the start of leaking stem valve seals.

Have you also checked the oil recently to make sure it isnt burning high amounts.

checked oil, hasnt lost any!!

On occassion idle seems to be rough, this is when it smokes, as soon as you rev engine the idle returns to normal and smoking stops

No mayo like substance in coolant, oil cap or dip stick, does nt overheat and does'nt loose any water, would these not be the symptoms of a knackered head gasket, done about 25 miles today without any probs or any smoke.
