the liners are good for 400 bhp according to GM, you can get better liners but expensive

the next step in porting the head is to open up the 'throat' area, still at the 'roughing out' stage

the idea is to straighten the sides rather than keep them curved inwards, the top (throat) has about 2-3mm removed to open up the flow, the pics don't really show very well how much bigger the throat becomes

then do some more to the outlet and start moving towards the throat area, not quite reached the middle of the ports yet

What I like to see is that what you have done is the same as I did with my first time self porting, thanks, looks great.

this pic shows the sides are now flat rather than curved

these couple of pics show that the middle section hasn't been reached yet, so plenty of work still to go

looks like I'm getting there but in reality this is only about 10% of the porting work done :crazy:

Surprising how long it takes isnt it. I used to bank on a full week to do a pair of SBC heads. I imagine that one is infinitely more fiddley! some serious work there. I'm not sure if it applies to ally heads but I have come across high pressure abrasive paste being used to take out the ports. Maybe a bit late but for future reference its not too dear and does the ports REALLY quickly.

I have bought a Saab sump and a lightened and balanced crank for the build, cheers Dr Lee :thumbup:

the saab sump has a larger capacity than the z22se sump, so a good idea. I removed the oil level sensor and then made a small baffle plate to cover the area left open by the removed sensor, this will help keep the oil near the pick up when cornering.

the seriously lightened and balanced z22yh crank, it requires a modified trigger wheel to work with the z22se ecu

vocky do you fancy making me a blanking plate for the end of the exhaust cam (as per your own saab head build). I'm using the saab/z20let cam cover and the standard saab turbo cams but I still need a blanking plate for the end and I don't have the facilities to make one myself 🙁 I can compensate you ofcourse 🙂 many thanks, Richard.

A crank with counterweights totally removed ?

That one is funny... make sure you use a good damper unit and do not rev too high with that

It's a z22YH crank not a z22se crank, so I'm not sure what they should look like before being lightened and balanced, has too much been removed notsure.gif

so what would be your advice Alanoo ?

I have been asked to build a reliable 350bhp Harrop engine and thats what the guy will get cheers..

if this crank isn't going to give that I need to know and it will be returned and another crank sourced, reliability is number 1 with this build.

Well, for me it is a pure power "drag" crank, but as for reliability, it will stress the block and especially the bearings so much I won't call it a good solution for a reliable build.

Dr Lee wrote himself counterweigths "removed" and it's just what they look like

to make 350 reliably It would be better to stick with a 2.2l crank, as to get the extra power from a 2.0l crank your either going to have to work the charger harder so more heat and parasitic loss or use more revs and the stress is proportional to the speed².

Another thing is IIRC this build was partily intended to go racing, I'd start looking at the regs as quite a few series and events regs i've read* don't permit you to change the crank.

*yes I am a sad engineer who would get far more pleasure out of building a car for the race than actually racing in it.

It will probably be made of 5mm plate rather than the 10mm I used on mine :thumbup:

an update;

I've finished doing the 'roughing out' on the exhaust ports and also finished doing the smoothing stage, given them a quick polish and just need to do a final polish.

I've also done a bit more on the inlets, but I'm waiting for some new carbide burrs too arrive so I can finish them.

what tool do you use for porting? I was going to use my dremel thing.. or is that not strong enough?

I put it in the dish washer and it cleaned all the old oil off really nice 😃

WRT the porting on these heads, does the engine respond well to cutting venturi's into the port above the valve seat? I've had good results with this on some builds but nothing on some others making the effort pointless.

That crank looks interesting. I've looked at the Z22SE crank and thought it was very heavily coulterweighted. I considered machining off a couple of opposing counterweights as I beleive you could do this and maintain balance. I also considered knife edging and counterboring the journals. I'd appreciate your opinion on this.

I use a die-grinder to remove the excess and then a dremel for the finishing work.

The lightened crank is still for sale, Dr Lee wants £250 for it. I agree that the z22se crank has too much counterweights, especially when steel rods and forged pistons are fitted.

today I made a blanking plug for the exhaust cam end bearing cap, this will allow the z22se cam cover to fit the saab head and thus the standard z22se coil pack will fit too :thumbup:
