Shall I Change it?

Is a camchain's lifecycle measured purely on mileage or by time as well, cos although my VX220 na has only done 23k miles, it's coming up for 6 years old.
I'd sooner be cautious and change it early than risk an expensive mishap but I don't want to spend money on something I don't really need.

I don't know if I've got the upgraded nozzle as it seems to be a bit of hit and miss on cars bought about the time mine was.

the chain is suposed to last up to 100k, but if your unsure if it the old type of has the old oil jets in it i would get it checked out to be safe and if it needs changing get it done

you got to remember that even though your car was registered at a specific date it doesnt mean that the engine was built with the modified components

mine was registered may 2002 but vxhall state that all cars from march 2002 onwards had the modified oil jets

i am sure there is a range of engine numbers that can tell whether the oil jet was modified

just dont know if it is applicable to vx220's

your best off asking vocky or wait for the chap to reply

I would get it done to be on the safe said, My astra is a 2003 and still had the old style jet.

the new chain was fitted to engines built from march 2002, so I doubt many cars before a 52 plate had the new style chain kit. Even then many 52 plates will have the old style chain kit.

03 plates and on generally have the later spec chain kit, but not always :wtf:

only reall way to know is tp strip it down to check ..it beeing a vx220 would be cheaper/better just to replace it

If you are worried about it then get it changed. Benny did mine on my VX220 and the piece of mind it gives is well worth the cost of the work.
If it was a belt you wouldn't think twice about getting it changed so why hestitate with a chain, it doesn't cost that much more if you go to the right people...

I've just got off the phone this afternoon from Vauxhall as I was pricing up everything needed for the Timing Chain job (not Balance Shaft Kit), trade discount of 10% and inc. oil and filter comes in at £185. That's gone up a fair bit since I had mine done back in 2006.

My mate who needs the parts was quoted £525 at the stealer for the timing chain job today!

lol it is about 85 quid for the chain kit and i can get geniune vxhall oil 10/40 for 13.50 5 ltres and 2.50 for original filter 🙂

Genuine Vauxhall dealer parts Mike. They would be more expensive without the trade discount. Not only are Vauxhall shafting us with the oil jet issue, they're hiking up the prices too.

Chain kits are available from ebay at £85 but i'm not sure if they are genuine?

The oil that I was quoted for was Vx Semi-Synthetic £11.49 for 5 ltrs.

sounds like the chains have gone up

i was quoted 97 quid including vat for the chain

Prices seem to be going up on a fair few things, my mate was looking at a new mountain bike the prices for the same model (2008) to this years new model has recently hiked up and with lower spec parts.

Whiteline and Bilstein have put the prices up.

So with CC we are now paying more for things?

i would say everything has gone up 30 - 50% in last 12 months
