My understanding of how it works it the standard ECU still controls the engine during idle, closed-loop mode etc.. Only when the throttle is open wide will the piggy back ECU begin to modify injector opening times, ignition timing etc.. When it does this is provides the standard ECU with false data to trick it into thinking it's running within the paramaters of the standard map.
In theory the Interceptor should support the Z22SE .. maybe no one has bothered to fit one before which is why Haltech say it can't be done .. ? notsure.gif Did they say specifically why it doesn't work? Probably not...
Using a L61 ECU would be a right pain in the arse to be honest .. plus it doesn't support drive by wire so there is that whole conversion process on top of all the re-wiring involved.
I was expecting to have to fit an external trigger wheel in order to use a piggy back ECU.
I've thought about sending the ECU overseas, but it's a long time to be without the car and you still only end up with a fairly "generic" map, not one that is tuned to your particular engine. When we get all excited about gaining power from doing simple mods, I'd wanna be damn sure that spending $600+ on a remap is going to get me every last drop of power available .. and only a rolling-road tune is gunna do that.
Maybe one of the guys from Courtenay might be kind enough to offer some advice on getting a piggy back ECU working with our engines (if they are lurking about). They installed one as part of their SC conversions at one point, proving that it can be done.
It sucks sometimes not being in a country where there are garages to choose from who can re-map the standard ECU .. but it's not the only way, just the easiest.
