hi my car is burning oil @ high revs

i have just swapped my subaru for a astra 2.2 sri, it drives well untill you go above 3500 rpm, then it fills the road with blue oily smoke, @ low revs its fine, no smoke at all, ive checked for signs of the head going (water/oil mix) but this seems fine, there no over heating, car runs sweet as a nut & level, ive been told by a few people that these engines are practicaly bullet proof & dont really suffer from any major problems, providing there serviced regular, this im not sure on as i have no service history after 65000 miles & the car is on 102000 now, oil & filter looks newish, ( although oil will be clean as its `burning it )if anyone has any sugestions it will help, thanks in advance, ste

If it is a car you are going to keep i would suggest getting the Cam chain changed. Unless it has already been done.

It could be piston rings that have gone?

I am sure that one of the more technical members will be able to give some better advice.

it does sound like the piston rings have gone.

Smoke on start up is valve seals

Smoke during hard accerlation is piston rings

will i be as well just getting a bottom end for it instead of having to put new rings in & honing it out etc,
how much are chain kits

it does sound like the rings, I wonder whether the cam chain snapped and damaged the pistons - this is a very common problem but easily fixed.

I would remove the head and then drop off the sump, slip out the pistons and see if the piston rings actually move, get a set of secondhand pistons and jobs done 🙂

hi, i have this oil burning problem too. i rebuilt a second hand head due to the old one being split, but after changing guides and seals i still get oil burning at high revs or when ive been driving down hills and then accelerating on flat, ive ordered new rings but could anyone tell me about honing as im not near a shop and have to do this myself with a drill honer. i'm capable of doing most things would this honing be just to take the shine off the bore and how much would have to be done.?

just another quicky, just wanted to know what grade stones i should be using to hone for new standard rings, i dont want to buy a honer then find out ive gotta order a new set of stones to go with it. also whats this oil pressure valve problem i hear about? if this is stuck on would this cause any permanent damage to rings or guides?

Just seen this post sounds a bit like my problem too which is a bit worrying as I really never thought it might be pistons.. :cry:
