Burning too much oil!

Hi,

I hope someone can help. The timing chain went on my 2.2 SRi about 5000 miles ago. In the process, 6 valves were bent and the camshaft cover cracked. No piston damage was evident. I replaced the timing chain, replaced the bent valves and camshaft cover. The car started first time - I was sooooo chuffed. However, I have noticed that the car is burning way to much oil (about 2.5 - 3 litres every 1000 miles). I cannot see any leaks and there is no blue smoke from the exhaust. The engine runs as sweet as anything with no loss of power. I use GM semi synthetic oil and the engine has done 150k miles.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

did you replace the valve guides ?

they can crack when the valves get damaged 🙁

also at 150k it will be using oil as the engine is past it's best, so the rings will be clogged up etc

No I didn't replace the valve guides as I could not see any cracks. I appreciate the car may use a bit more than the specified 1litre/1000 miles but 2.5 - 3 litres seems far too much!

Is it worth taking the head off again and getting the valve guides replaced anyway?

I would recommend having all 16 changed due to the mileage

and whilst the head is off drop the sump and whip the pistons out, remove the rings and clean out the piston ring slots, refit and job done 🙂

summer is always better to do jobs like that 🙂

ps: the sump drops straight off, so accessing the pistons is very easy when the head is off
