Timing Chain

Hi im currently ordering all my parts for my engine rebuild gaskets etc. Just wondering as all gears and guides are fine with no wear on them as the previous timing chain had only done 15000 miles. Im changing the chain as a matter of course.
Do i need to buy the full kit or can i just buy and change the chain as the rest looks fine??

if it's the later spec chain kit then re-use all of it

Cheers Vocky yes its the later spec kit and has big oil jet too. I cant see any signs of stretch on the chain either :thumbup: :thumbup: :thumbup:

Okay im inthe middle of fitting my chain now. I have got it all lined up with the correct marks. The tensioner is in and everything no signs of any slack so all looks good. But when i turn the crankshaft to check there is no valve contact the chain jumps a little not on the teeth but as though it produces slack then tightens again.

I am turning the crank clockwise is this the correct direction to turn it?

Also could the jumping be because of the tensioner having no oil pressure in?

Hi, yes you are turning the crank the right way, when you put the tensioner in, did you make sure the piston in the tensioner was in correctly, could you push the piston in a bit and feel the pressure, when you screw it into the head it should take up all of the slack on the chain, have you put the bottom crank casing back on yet?

Hi yes there was pressure when i tried to push in the piston. when the tensioner was fitted all the slack has been taken up, I have fitted the cover now and it doesnt seem to be doing it like it was but am thinking this is due to no oil/pressure in the tensioner until the engine is running.

possibly, i have just done one and i got no clicking or chain jumping, was the chain from the inlet cam to the crank nice and tight before you put the tensioner in, i would hate it to have jumped a tooth which does happen unfortunately

Yes it was nice and tight, I have double checked the marks since and still all lined up nicely.

Thats good, i can't think of anything else it could be, if you are manually turning the crank and its not clunking on the valves then should be fine to start it up, let us know how it goes

Yes i have manually rotated the engine several times and all seems well, will keep you posted when i get the engine back in. Cheers cheers..

the chain does go slack very slighty when manually cranked over, nothing to worry about

Hi no worries, its still sat on the stand at the min, I have other bits i need to do before i put it in. Its all built up though so thats a good start.......
