TIMING CHAIN HELP NEEDED!!

Hi guys!
Im new on this site.
Need some help.Ive heard that timing chains are a problem on z22se engines!
Iv got a 2002 Astra Sri 2.2 and my chain was rattling so iv put it in at my friends garage to get done.My friend rung me today and said the balance shaft chain( I think thats what its called) Is loose.
Its not meant to be loose is it??

Welcome to the site mate. Yes they are a bit of a problem and no your chain shouldn't be loose. Not sure if your year should have been done on a recall or not but i'm sure someone a bit more in the know will be along soon to answer your question.

Out of interest, where do you kickbox mate? I do Muay Thai up in Warrington, do you fight?

I dont seem to be having much luck with this car!
Looks like I'm going to have to go and get that chain kit as well....
I've seen a lot of people mention about "benny the chainman" does anyone know how much he charges?

get the chains replaced straight away, once loose they will soon snap and kill your engine

I've had the chain replaced today which cost me an arm and a leg if you ask me!
Quick question,the bottom rod that cogs from both the balancer and timing kit has a little play in it.Im no mechanic but its nots supposed to move around is it?

sounds like the crank woodruff key is worn, this allows the crank sprockets to move slightly, once the crank pulley is fitted they won't move 🙂

Cheers,I was about to cry as The chain kits cost me £260! :crazy:
So it wont affect the chains that have been put on?

I know what the wood ruff key is and it aint that,the whole spindle has a little play in it! :wtf: What else could it be?

If anyone lives in the essex/east london area or close and is finding it hard to get up to Benny.My mechanic is good and charges £120 to fit the chain kit.

well the sprockets fit onto the crankshaft, so it can only be a worn crankshaft

hopefully the crank pulley will stop any movement 🙂

Glad you've got it sorted mate, going to get mine done soon for peace of mind.

Don't fight at the mo, have done in the past, going to start again soon...just getting back into shape! Good luck with the fight in March mate.
