Hi, Sorry guys for not replying earlier but I didn't get e-mail for all the extra posts.
ATOM X : How much do you want for a head? I'd prefer Saab obviously, but if you have a Z22SE I'd be interested too...
EcotecFiero: When you trashed your pistons, it was purely boost? You were on a non-VVT engine? I'll have to check my cam lifts properly, but I'm wondering if my issues were related to VVT at all now as I don't see head trauma where the valves would have hit... As I did my own ECU for this, I have to admit the engine definitely suffered more than its fair share of backfires and premature ignition while I got things sorted, but I always figured these things were pretty bullet-proof so I never really considered it would be a problem (especially on an engine that had 7 miles on it when I got it!).
Does anyone have a good place for new Pistons in the UK? Looking at the current ones there's less than 1mm of metal between the rings and the piston top diagonally so I'd prefer some uprated ones if they're not masses more money.
Current plan is to replace the pistons and stick a new head on with the Webcon ECU and ITBs (still on order, thanks vocky 🙂 ), although I'm still toying with using the old head and making up a new Control Unit for just the Cams - I'll try and check the profile of the cams this weekend and see if I feel confident I can make hardware/software to stop it destroying itself again 🙂 I hate to admit defeat, but I kinda feel that it would take way more dyno time to make decent HP than if I just used a non VVT head (although it could be that I was getting low HP before because I had 3 sodding great holes in my pistons!).
On a slightly different note - I was half kidding before, but I had a look around and found that Oxford YASA motors do an inboard ungeared 500Nm electric motor that's 85kw = 114hp. That's actually pretty near to 147hp - drivetrain losses, and they're pitching for 2 per drive wheel. It's a bit more than I would have considered (£6k + all the rest), but if I can write it off as research through the company it would be awesome. It's definitely an option - I'm getting fed up unbolting cylinder heads 🙂
