dodgy egr valve!

for about a month my car has had really poor mpg then yesterday it started running really lumpy and felt like it was misfiring, so i took the egr valve out and found this

so i removed the bit of metal and cleaned the valve and refitted it , the car then ran ok for 20 mins then started feeling lumpy again. im going to order a blanking plate and a cheater to get rid of the valve which i now think is knackered!

BUT what bothers me most is where the fuck did that piece of metal come from , anybody got any ideas!

it looks like a piece of the washer which sits at the bottom of the plunger spring, otherwise it has got to come from inside the engine !

ive got the blanking plate should i use the gasket off the egr valve, because it didnt come with one?

yes use the original gasket

right blanking plate fitted, but it doesnt seem to be running right still, the egr is bolted on but swung out so it can operate.
when would i be able to see the egr operate and can i test it off the car, and if it is knackered and stuck would the ecu know this and could this be causing the poor running.

i know ive read about this before on here but i find it hard reading through loads of posts, so any ideas ie vocky the z22se guru, or a link to the correct thread.

ill probably order a cheater shortly anyway but would like to know in the meantime.

I may be wrong but I was under the impression that even if it was blacked off if you had a faulty EGR valve it would still give issues.

once blanked off it should stop the bad running issues, might be worth resetting the ecu and then let it settle down for 30 miles or so.

you will get an eml if the egr valve is faulty, apply 12v to the outer pins and see if it opens

cheers vocky i was thinking about reseting the ecu, its starting to settle down now though, ill try 12v on it anyway.

30 minutes shoule be enough to reset the ECU

I am going to try it today. Outer means the far left und far right? Sorry for being thick soetimes notsure.gif

Thanks to the information where to apply the 12V, ich could clean my EGR with a wire brush and some chemicals 😉 Looks like new now.

Now the sealing face is freed from coom and I am happy with the EGR at the moment. We'll see if I change my mind someday. The blanking plate is already lying in the cellar for more than 3 years. You never know...
