Water Pump

Hello

Quick question! According to popular belief your supposed to change the timing belt every 100000, no probs. However the water pump is driven by the balance chain so how often should the water pump be replaced, every 100000 miles or is there another interval for that?

The reason I ask is i will be changing the casket on my timing chain cover soon so while its off i might as well do the water pump to.

Also any idea what the stealers charge for a pump?

u can get a new water pump from ebay for a resonable price (around £40 iirc).. pretty easy to change, although you will probably need to take the thermostat housing off too to remove the pipe (it's a push fit one)

a new pump is about £115 from the dealer, I have replaced a few due to leaks and all had done less than 50k !

so it would be a good idea to replace the pump at the same time as both chains

ps; the reason why the genuine part is so expensive is it comes complete with the drive sprocket, the ebay items don't even have the pipe flange let alone the sprocket.

I replaced mine the other day as you may know.. is it usual for a new pump to make a high pitched noise while "running in"?

no mate you need to double check that and see what is wrong

benny.. do you always use official vaxhaull pumps? This is a cheap ebay jobbe, I think the noise is the seals/bearings rubbing? the chain is definately setup right.. It's all working fine but the noise is just annoying

I bought it months ago when I was preparing to put the EWP in.. so I'm pretty sure I have no warranty anymore

i would look for another one mate before it does any damage ,, i will always use the genuine vx pump or i may stretch to a good pattern part that is a complete unit , i have seen a few of these pumps come with bits missing where the original part have them ,....

the high pitched noise/whine went away when I retimed everything... I'm assuming it was the balance shafts misaligned.. now we'll know if anyone asks again 🙂

Thats great news, should have returned mine to the garage when I was unsure about its sound.
May have been a factor to my chain guides fracturing and my chain jumping that fatal day.

Can someone explain to me, if it is probable that the balance shafts can misaligne when you change the water pump without the water pump fixing tool?

A friend of mine has a very very lumpy idle und the engine does not run well. He has changed 3 things: new dbilas camshafts and a lightened flywheel and changed the water pump without the tool. Mapping the ECU at a famous tuner did not help. Flywheel was balanced before installing.

you cannot replace the water pump without using a pump locking tool, so the balancers will be wrongly timed and causing the issues 🙁

remove the oil pump and reset the timing

thank you for confirming my assumption. I would like to fix it, but he is living 300km away from me. He's gonna ask an Opel dealer tomorrow for the price. Possibly it is cheaper for him to drive 600km 😃
