Do I need to get the chain done ?

Hi,
My other half has just bought an 02 plate Vectra SRi estate with about 104k on the clock.
The motor is very quiet, with no nasty noises at all - I've looked at the back of the camchain tunnel and can see that the modified tensioner is fitted, but obviously have no clue as to whether the spray nozzle has been changed.
Would it be best to just bite the bullet and get a chain kit fitted anyway for peace of mind ? I'm quite happy changing the oil every 5k.....
I wouldn't do the camchain meself - I'm quite happy taking my bike to bits but it's a bit tight in the engine bay of one of these....

Its my understanding that it should be changed at 100k miles anyway.

as above, they both should be changed every 100,000 miles

TBH, That's what we were thinking.
Gonna contact the garages who have done the service work to see if they have ever renewed the chain and if not, contact the muchly recommended Benny...

i have recently brought a y reg sri 150 with 67,000 on clock with full service history ,stating engine oil was changed every ten thousound.on the 40,000 service it states that the timing chain was replaced, but no paperwork to prove it. Upon inspection of the engine i have notice i think its got an uprated cam chain tentioner,because of the grooves in the corners of the large 'rusty bolt'. there are no noise's at all from the engine and it runs fine. I was thinking of getting just the oil jets done or do you have to have the chain done at the same time? I would like to know what to do because of the high mileage i will do each week(550miles.) regards dan.

The cut outs on the bolt is not the way to tell unfortuatly mine had cut outs to and mine had the old oil jet! I would get the chain looked at for peace of mind remove the cam cover on the top of the engine and check for the different cam chain timing links.

the oil jet is part of the kit, the only way to tell is the later spec chain kit has blue and purple timing marks whereas the old style had silver and bronze (there are only three coloured links on the chain, so you might have to turn the engine over to find them)

i left the post yesterday about the sri2.2 with 67000 on clock and was unsure if the timing chain needed doing. i have since managed to contact the garage that did the 40000 mile service in december 2005 and they said ,they changed the timing chain,oil jet,and tensioner because the old chain had sliped not snapped, they also replaced some valves and valve seat guides, also skimmed the head. they said they used a genuine vauxhall timing chain kit,so in 2005 you would think vauxhall would have send the uprated kit (i hope!) But also with the chain only being done 27000 miles ago, and serviced every 8000 miles since i would think it should be o.k? also forgot to say he gave me the part number of the chain kit he used 12577385.(hope this is up rated one!)

they never sold the old style chain in a kit, the kit came about due to the dodgy old style stuff and was the later spec 🙂
