Timing Chain - What am I looking / listening for?

Hi,

I'm new to the site! I am looking at a 51 plate 2.2 Astra coupe tomorrow that a colleague at work is selling.

The timing chain was done 6 months ago by a VX deapership but a family mechanic friend of the owner looked at the car tonight and reckoned there was a fault with the "timing chain sensor" that he picked out from listening to the engine!?! He offered her a silly price which she refused...

So... He is either bang on the money and there is a fault or he was trying to screw her out of money, either way I don't have a way of knowing!

When I look at the car tomorrow, what should I look or listenout for? All help appreciated!!

there is no such thing as a timing chain sensor on the z22se engine, if the chain was replaced by a dealer it will be good for 100,000 miles as long as it's serviced correctly.

if there was a tapping noise it may be a cracked exhaust manifold or noisy hydraulic lifters

Sorry for being such a newbie but how much ££ roughly am I looking at to get a (the?) lifters sorted? notsure.gif

If it's the lifters, it could be something as simple as adding some of this: Wynns Hydraulic Valve Lifter 350ml
